- Alabama remains one of only 2 states left (with the State
of Mississippi) that does not offer any offset, rebate or
break on sales tax on food and groceries.
- Alabama families continue to struggle to meet rapidly
rising fuel costs, skyrocketing mortgages and expanding
insurance payments in the midst of a severe, history-
making recession. Many can no longer afford to feed
their children.
- An amendment to the Alabama Constitution is proposed
to remove the state portion of sales tax on groceries to
provide critical help to working Alabamians and their
families, who are struggling to survive in the “Middle
Class” crack.

HB116, the Food Tax Bill, receives the 2009 Shroud Award!
Each year, in a fun, light moment at the end of the Legislative
Session, one member receives "The Shroud Award" honoring the
"deadest bill" of the legislative session. Knight considers the receipt
of this year's award a testament of members' refusal to give up on a
fair shot for average families.
