The Food Tax Bill
  • Is there more than one "food tax" bill?
Yes, several members of the legislature have introduced bills dealing with the
sales tax on food.  The Knight bill however, removes the state sales tax from
food, candy and soda; phases out the federal income tax deduction,
preserving this deduction for most taxpayers; and protects the Education
Trust Fund without raiding critical funds needed in Alabama clasrooms.

  • If the legislature approves this measure, does it
    automatically become law?
No.  House Bill 116 is a constitutional amendment that if passed by the
Alabama Legislature will require a vote of the people of Alabama before
  becoming law.
